Lifestyle and Sexual Health

Sexual health is an integral part of human health. WHO defines sexual health as “a state of physical, mental and social well-being in relation to sexuality”. Several problems such as prostate cancer, unplanned pregnancy, and sexuality transmitted infections can undermine a person’s sexual health. What a person does in his daily life can affect his overall health. Certain lifestyle changes cannot only improve a person’s sex life but can also make him healthier.

With age, the sexual health of men and women start to deteriorate. The idea of being sexually healthy can differ with age. The teenage years are crucial to determine a person’s sexual development. What a person does during his adolescence can set the foundation for mature, healthy sexual relationships in his later life. With age, men would become more likely to develop erectile dysfunction. Similarly, the estrogen level of women will decrease during the time of menopause. Several medications are available to solve such problems.

Exercise is beneficial to both men and women to achieve sexual health. For men, regular exercise will keep their cardiovascular system healthy. The level of sexual hormones and endorphins tends to increase with routine exercise. Emotional stress releases adrenaline and cortisol that constrict the arteries, non-aerobic reducing the blood flow to the genitals. Stress can gradually make a person age faster than he should. Healing hormones are released during meditation. A non-aerobic exercise can reduce stress levels to a great extent. Lack of sleep may be the cause of many sexual problems like erectile dysfunction. Beneficial hormones are released during sleep. It is necessary to sleep enough to improve libido and sex life.

It is a fact that alcohol can affect a woman’s reproductive system and reduce a man’s testosterone levels. Though alcohol such as red wine may protect the human body from heart diseases and cancer, excess alcohol can be immensely harmful. Similarly, tobacco consumption may have a negative impact on sexual health. Tobacco can harm arteries and veins by narrowing blood vessels, including those in the penis. This would consequently cause harm to sexual health. It would be a wise idea to quit smoking for the sake of sexual well being. In other words, sexual health would act as a motivation to stop smoking.

Eating healthy food is a vital not only for sexual health but for overall health too. Consumption of an unhealthy diet can make a person feel sluggish. It would also result in an increase in body weight. Eating vegetables and fruits that are rich in vitamins will positively affect sex life. The Mediterranean diet is supposedly a great choice for achieving good sexual health. The antioxidant nutrients in such food can improve libido. Food such as oysters, asparagus, and avocado are good for sexual health. Weight loss will also improve confidence. Food containing high levels of sugar is not recommended, neither are those with meat and cheese. Similarly, food containing caffeine can restrict blood flow. However, chocolate is said to have a positive effect on libido, though it contains a certain amount of caffeine.

Such tiny lifestyle tweaks can do wonders to sexual health. By adopting a healthy lifestyle to improve sexual health, the overall health of a person will also improve. The heart would be the organ that would benefit most from such a lifestyle, in turn benefitting the rest of the organs. The older a person gets, the more would his body respond to a healthy lifestyle. It is essential to remember that sexual health is an important part of a healthy life.
